When registering for grades 9th through 12th, your Counselor will review your academic history. Your academic history includes the courses you took, the academic rigor of those courses, your grades, your attendance record, and any examinations you may have taken. If there were gaps in your education, they may ask more questions to understand your academic history better.

This academic assessment by your Counselor is conducted to determine the best classes for you. Whether or not you speak English is not taken into consideration. All teachers are capable of assisting you in your classes while you learn English. Your academic success is more than just how much English you know. It's about your willingness to learn and try your best! Remember, you are not alone on this journey, and if you need more help, don't be shy and ask for it!

We have several levels of coursework for each subject:

Regular: These are courses offered on a 4.0 scale, with standard rigor and pace. (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0)
Honors: These courses are offered at a higher rigor and faster pace and are given an extra quality point on a 5.0 scale (A=5.0, B=4.0, C=3.0, D=1.0, F=0)
Advanced Placement: These courses are offered at the highest rigor and a fast pace, given two extra quality points on a 6.0 scale. These courses are considered to be at the college level. Other advanced-level courses include Dual Enrollment, AICE-Cambridge, and IB-International Baccalaureate. (A=6.0, B=5.0, C=4.0, D=1.0, F=0)

IMPORTANT: If you were taking advanced-level courses in your country and feel the courses you were placed in need to be more challenging, you must discuss this with your teacher and return it to your Counselor so the placement can be revised. It would be best if you did not stay in courses that are too easy for you.

If you play sports, inquire about the sports available at the school. Ask who the coaches are and how to contact them about joining the team. Different sports practice throughout the year.

If you are artistic, play an instrument, sing, or love the theatre, ask about classes, clubs, and after-school activities.

If you have a particular interest, such as business or law, mechanics, or technology, inquire about it. There may be classes or clubs where you can explore your interests. These are called "electives" and are courses you choose based on your interests that earn credits toward graduation. Clubs after school do not count for credits, but you can join if interested or just for fun.
