ELL ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT OPTIONS FOR GRADUATION

What are the state assessment requirements?

Students must pass the following statewide assessments:

• Grade 10 FSA ELA or FSAT PMP 3 with a level 3 or a concordant score (ACT or SAT)

• Algebra 1 end of course (EOC) or a comparative score

Students enrolled in the following courses must participate in the corresponding EOC assessment, which constitutes 30 percent of the final course grade+:

  • Algebra 1
  • Geometry
  • Biology 1
  • U.S. History

+Special note: Thirty percent is not applicable if you have not enrolled in the course but passed the EOC (credit acceleration program [CAP]).

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS FOR ELLs

This alternate testing option satisfies the reading and writing component for state graduation assessment requirements.

We encourage you to prepare and take the SAT, ACT, PSAT, and FSA ELA standard testing to attempt to get the scores to be college-ready.

Remember, this alternative assessment is only accepted in Broward County Public Schools, if you are planning on moving check with your new school board about alternative graduation requirements. Scores for SAT, ACT, PSAT, FSA ELA Standard test are widely accepted. 

There is no alternative testing that replaces the Algebra 1 requirement.

Assessment Graduation Requirements for ELLs Students (Less Than 2 Years):

    • Eligible Students: Those enrolled in an ESOL Program for less than 2 school years, primarily 11th and 12th graders.
  • Options for Grade 10 ELA Assessment Requirement:

    • Option A:

      • Complete at least 2 units (includes assigned activities and assessments) from district adopted ELA instructional materials.
      • Average passing score of 70%.
    • Option B:

      • Passing score on both Grade 10 district-developed mid-term and final exams located on Mastery Connect.
    • Option C:

      • Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) Growth Measure Grade Level Equivalency of High School Level (Fall, Winter, or Spring).
    • Option D:

      • Passing score on Broward Standards Assessment (BSA) Grade 10 ELA.
    • Option E:

      • Level 4 Reading score and Level 4 Composite score on the ACCESS for ELLs state assessments.
  • Accommodations: Allowed on all options.

  • Additional Information:

    • If a student hasn't met the assessment or alternative assessment for graduation by the end of senior year:
      • They can receive English language instruction during the summer following senior year.
      • This instruction is provided through an instructional model for English Language Learners.
