Water Matters Day Haiku Contest/Challenge

Elementary and Middle School Students

Write a haiku poem on the topic below. A traditional Japanese haiku is a three-line poem with seventeen syllables, written in a 5/7/5 syllable count. Often focusing on images from nature, haiku emphasizes simplicity, intensity, and directness of expression. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners and their teachers will be presented with prizes and recognized by a School Board Member or representative at the Water Matters Day event on March 11, 2023.

Teachers: We would like to invite your students to participate in the competition by writing a haiku poem on the topic below. A traditional Japanese haiku is a three-line poem with seventeen syllables, written in a 5/7/5 syllable count. Often focusing on images from nature, haiku emphasizes simplicity, intensity, and directness of expression. There will be two 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners: Elementary School level and Middle School level. Winning students and their teachers will be presented with prizes and recognized by a School Board Member or representative at the Water Matters Day event. We hope you will encourage your students to participate in this project as either an in-class or extra credit assignment. This year’s theme is “Save BLUE. Live GREEN.” which acknowledges that water conservation is an integral part to sustainable living while saving you money in utility bills. The following is the topic for this year’s poetry contest:

Did you know that less than 1% of all the water on Earth can be used by people? By conserving water in and outside your home, you can help save this precious resource for present and future generations. You can also save money on your household’s monthly utility bill. In your haiku, explain your “why” for conserving water and how you will save BLUE to live GREEN.

Entries must include the name of the student, teacher, and school; be typed in a minimum 12-point font. Research is encouraged.

HOW TO SUBMIT:

Students submit their haikus to their teachers. Teachers/admin select the top 3 entries from each school and forward only the top 3 entries and the Certification Statement/Participant Release form for each student to Victor Suarez (vsuarez@broward.org), Broward County Natural Resources Division, via email. Entries must be received by Friday, February 10, 2023. Haikus should be scanned and sent electronically as an attachment.
